NPTEL

The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) was initiated by ministry of HRD, Government of India to provide quality education to anyone interested in learning from the IITs. At that time seven Indian Institutes of Technology (Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Chennai, Guwahati and Roorkee) along with the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru in 2003 were participating IITs. The main goal was to create web content and create course based upon video lectures in all major branches of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels and Management courses at the Postgraduate level. In the beginning five core disciplines were identified, namely, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering and 235 courses in web/video format were developed in this phase.

Since 2013, through online portal, 4-weeks, 8-weeks and 12-weeks online courses, typically on topics relevant to various subjects in all years of higher education along with basic core courses in sciences and humanities with exposure to relevant tools and technologies, are being offered. The enrolment to and learning from these courses involves no cost. The mode of examination is an in-person, proctored online examination. certification exam (optional) will be conducted at Rs. 1000/- per course and a certificate is provided through the participating institutions and industry, when applicable.
